Trans-Seasonal Style Tips

One of the biggest challenges my clients face each year is dressing during that awkward in-between period when winter isn’t quite finished but spring is already calling. Yesterday’s snow storm is now melting away, leaving us scratching our heads when getting ready, and heavy coats suddenly feel like too much, while lighter pieces alone won’t keep you warm. This is where trans-seasonal dressing becomes an art form. The key is layering, mixing textures, and choosing pieces that can adapt throughout the day. I always recommend building outfits with versatile anchor pieces or items that can work in both colder and warmer temperatures depending on how they’re styled.

Look 1: The Elevated Layered Neutral

This is one of my go-to formulas for clients who want to look polished but effortless. Start with a cream lightweight knit sweater layered over a fresh, white button-down. Pair it with tailored camel trousers for a sophisticated base or straight leg denim for a more casual take. Add a structured trench coat, a transitional wardrobe hero that instantly makes an outfit feel intentional. Finish the look with leather loafers or sleek ankle boots and a structured tote.

Tara’s Style Edit: Leave the shirt cuffs and collar slightly visible for a layered look that feels styled but not overdone.

Look 2: The Leather Jacket Refresh

A leather jacket is one of the best transitional pieces in any wardrobe. Pair a leather jacket in any color with a soft knit midi dress in a muted spring color like sage, butter yellow, or dusty rose. The textural contrast between the soft dress and structured jacket keeps the outfit balanced and looking polished. Add knee-high boots or sleek sneakers depending on the occasion.

Tara’s Style Edit: A belt at the waist can help define your shape when layering multiple pieces.

Look 3: The Relaxed Tailoring Combo

Trans-seasonal dressing is the perfect time to experiment with lightweight tailoring. Start with wide-leg trousers or a cashmere skirt in a soft neutral shade like sand, chocolate brown or dove gray. Pair it with a fitted ribbed knit tank and layer on an oversized blazer in a contrasting color. Complete the look with minimalist sneakers, riding boots, or slingback flats.

Tara’s Style Edit: Push up the sleeves of your blazer slightly to give the outfit a relaxed, spring-ready feel.
