Modern Heritage Dressing
There’s something comforting about fall’s familiar pieces: a tailored blazer, a cable-knit sweater, a great barn jacket. This week, I’m looking at how to wear them with a little more ease and personality while keeping your look chic and stylish. The trick is to borrow the details you love from heritage dressing, then give the outfit a proportion or texture that feels like you.
Look 1: The Classic City Look
Start with a gray herringbone blazer and relaxed, wide-leg trousers. Underneath, I’d keep it simple with a fine knit or white tee, then add polished leather loafers. It has all the appeal of classic menswear, but the looser trouser makes it feel current.
Tara’s Style Edit: When your blazer has a traditional pattern, let the shape of your trousers bring the look into the present. A relaxed leg keeps herringbone from feeling too formal.
Look 2: The Country Weekend Look
A cropped barn jacket in warm olive is my starting point here. Layer it over a cable-knit cashmere sweater, then add a textured pant or legging and finish with knee-high leather boots. I love the mix of practical outerwear, a beautiful knit, and then focus your silhouette by grounding the look with a textured pant. It’s an easy outfit for a fall Saturday that still looks considered.
Tara’s Style Edit: A shorter jacket works especially well over fuller denim. It defines your waist and gives the outfit shape without requiring a belt or a tuck.
Look 3: The Heritage After Dark Look
For dinner, I’d take a checked wool skirt and pair it with an oversized bow blouse. Finish with sleek boots or sky high patent leather pumps in a rich hue like burgundy, chocolate or even black and a small structured bag. The checks nod to traditional dressing, while the sheer texture and dramatic bow make the combination feel playful and evening ready.
