How To Style Lace, Leather & Velvet this Fall

Lace, leather and velvet each bring something daring to an outfit. Lace adds delicacy and sex appeal, leather provides structure and edge, and velvet gives color a beautiful and rich depth. I am wearing all three across my fall wardrobe, but I don’t need them competing in every look. My approach is to let one texture lead, then use familiar pieces to make it feel wearable. Here’s how I’d take these fabrics from a casual dinner to a more dressed-up evening.

Look 1: Lace and Dark Denim

Pair a black lace blouse with dark straight jeans and pointed black ankle boots. If the blouse is sheer, add a smooth black camisole for coverage that lets the lace pattern remain visible. Throw a slightly oversized blazer over your shoulders or wear it properly when the temperature drops. I’d keep the jewelry small and let the neckline and sleeves provide the detail.

Tara’s Style Edit: The layer underneath is part of the look. A clean camisole keeps intricate lace readable and gives you control over coverage.

Look 2: Chocolate Leather and Softness

For daytime, I’d wear chocolate leather trousers with a tailored knit, brown loafers or heels and a long wool coat. The contrast between the smooth leather and a soft sweater makes a neutral palette feel rich. Choose a knit that ends near the waistband or use a light front tuck. A suede tote adds another texture without introducing a new color or more hardware.

Tara’s Style Edit:  Balance leather’s texture with something soft. A relaxed sweater makes leather trousers feel natural for daytime.

Look 3: Velvet Trousers and a Casual Top

Black or copper velvet trousers, a white button-down and pointed pumps are my kind of evening formula. Leave the collar open, tuck the shirt cleanly and add a single statement earring. The cotton brings some crispness to velvet’s plush finish, so the outfit feels polished without becoming overly formal. For a colder night, add a black tailored coat and carry a small satin bag.

Tara’s Style Edit:  Give velvet a matte companion. Crisp cotton helps its texture stand out without piling on more shine. When the fabric has personality, the rest of the outfit can relax. Start with one texture and build around its strengths.
