Denim Alternatives That Are Just As Cool

Denim is the wardrobe staple for all of us, but sometimes it’s fun to switch things up and play with some new alternatives. Many of my clients ask for pieces that feel just as easy as jeans but offer a slightly more polished or unexpected look, and I rise to that challenge. Luckily, there are plenty of stylish alternatives that deliver the same versatility. Here are three pieces I often recommend when clients want a break from denim.

Look 1: A Tailored But Toned-Down Trouser

A well-cut pair of tailored trousers, toned down, can easily replace your favorite jeans. Try a high-waisted, wide-leg pair in black, navy, or camel. Style them with a simple white tee and a structured blazer or a thin knit crew neck sweater to keep it minimal. Add a sleek pair of sneakers or loafers for a casual but refined look.

Tara’s Style Edit: Look for trousers with a slight stretch to maintain comfort throughout the day.

Look 2: The Everyday Skirt

A skirt can be just as versatile as denim, if you style is well. Opt for a midi length or a maxi if you prefer, and choose a rich fabric like satin, wool, or leather and pair it with a fitted knit sweater or tucked-in blouse. Complete the outfit with ankle boots or ballet flats and minimal jewelry for a chic finish.

Tara’s Style Edit: Create proportional balance with a cropped or tucked in top to off set the skirt length and silhouette.

Look 3: The Re-Defined Chino Pant

Chino’s no more - now we are seeing twill and tailored cuts in summer neutral hues, and barrel, wide, and straight leg shapes to flatter your figure. The new chino-inspired casual pant offers the same casual vibe as denim but with a more fashion-forward edge, with lots of variety available to shop. Like cargo-style, horseshoe shapes, high rise, wide legs, flares, and utility pants. Opt for an olive, cream, grey, or navy for optimal versatility. Pair them with a fitted tank and cropped jacket for an effortless look or heels and a blazer for a more formal take.

Tara’s Style Edit: Choose a slightly tapered or tailored version of these casual pants to keep the look elevated and finish with a luxe belt.
