What Are We Wearing to Dinner That Isn’t a Dress?

Dinner outfits in the new year are officially about confidence over convention. Dresses will always have their place, but the most stylish women I know are reaching for elevated separates that are modern, luxurious, and chic. Whether it’s date night, a girls’ dinner, or a business-casual restaurant moment, the goal is effortless impact, without feeling predictable. Below are three go-to dinner looks that aren’t dresses, but feel just as polished and “dressy”.

Look 1: An Elevated Trouser

Tailored trousers are my current dinner date go-to. Think structured barrel leg wool pants, a fluid, wide leg pant with a satin-finish, or a sharp pleated trouser paired with a statement top or blazer. A sculptural blouse, silk shell, sheer knit or strong shoulder blazer instantly elevates the look while keeping it effortless. Finish with a polished flat or a heel, depending on your preference for the night.

Tara’s Style Edit:
When skipping a dress, balance structure with softness by going with tailoring on the bottom, and soft, fluidity on top. Bonus: trousers with movement always read “styled.”

Look 2: A Chic Set

Matching sets are a dinner MVP when you want to look pulled together with minimal effort. A knit top with coordinating pants or even a skirt feels cohesive without trying too hard. These sets look specially chic in rich neutrals like espresso, soft ivory, olive, navy or charcoal. Counter the look with a strappy heel, pumps, or a slouchy boot to elevate the minimalist vibe of your coordinated set. Style your hair back in a low bun or smooth ponytail and finish with a metallic ear cuff for some edge.

Tara’s Style Edit:
Monochrome sets elongate the body and glow beautifully in dim dinner lighting - perfect for photos, candlelight, and confidence.

Look 3: A Statement Jacket

For cooler nights, let the jacket be the outfit. A cropped leather or moto jacket, structured tweed, or a softly tailored blazer worn open over a simple base instantly adds polish and personality. Keep what’s underneath minimal and unfussy. Opt for a silk or fine knit tank or fitted crew neck tee under your statement jacket and complete the look with vintage straight leg denim to counter a softer look on top or go for a dark and structured more formal feeling denim with a leather statement jacket to create an evening look that's still understated yet fashion forward.

Tara’s Style Edit:
Your outer layer is part of the outfit - not an afterthought. Choose it with the same intention you would a dress.
