Chic Looks for College Drop Off

College drop-off is one of those milestone moments no one quite prepares you for. In addition to the boxes to carry, beds to make, and roommates to meet, there are always a few tears to hide behind your sunglasses. And then there’s the question I’m always thinking about: What are we wearing?

The college drop-off outfit needs to do a lot. You want to be comfortable enough to haul a storage bin up three flights of stairs, polished enough for the inevitable family photos, and cool enough that your child doesn’t immediately ask you to wait in the car. The goal is elevated, effortless, and practical. Here are three ways I’d style it.

The Elevated Sporty Look

Think polished athleisure but absolutely no gym clothes required. I love a relaxed, wide leg track or cargo pants that look put together but still athletic. Pair it with a fitted white tee and a lightweight sweater draped over your shoulder. Finish with a pair of retro adidas sneakers and oversized sunnies and a roomy tote.

Tara’s Style Edit: When comfort is the priority, upgrade the silhouette. A relaxed trouser paired with a fitted tank and cool sneaker is just as comfortable as leggings but looks infinitely more intentional. Keep the palette neutral and let the sneaker add personality.

The Classic East Coast Look

This is for the mom who wants to look effortlessly pulled together without looking like she tried too hard. Keep it clean and classy, go with a slightly oversized, lightweight button-down. Add a great fitting pair of denim shorts, a clean white sneaker, and a few polished accessories. It's classic, easy, and works particularly well for those late-August and early-September move-in days when the weather can't quite decide what season it is.

Tara’s Style Edit: The secret to making basics look expensive is proportion. Pair an oversized shirt with a defined waist, then finish with simple accessories. You don't need more pieces, you need the right proportions.

The Look of Leisure

For the mom who wants comfort but also something a little more stylish for the big day, athleisure is always a great option - but lets make it elevated. Style a sleek pair of leggings, capri’s or bike shorts with your favorite athletic sneaker and mid-calf socks for a more modern take. Choose your favorite denim shirt, varsity style sweatshirt or lightweight cardigan to complete the effortless look.

Tara Style Edit: This look can be dressed up with hoops and a quick change into loafers or ballet flats and an oversized blazer can help transition for semi-casual dinner plans.
